Guangzhou police bust armed car-theft gang
A car-theft gang was arrested in Guangzhou, capital of southern Guangdong Province after exchanging gunfire with police early yesterday, Guangzhou Daily reported.
One officer was injured in the chest after he was hit by the car of the four suspects, who were all wounded as they tried to escape and were treated in a local hospital, police said.
The gang was found suspicious on Sunday night and plainclothes policemen began to stalk them. After the gang parked their car in a neighborhood near Zhongshan Road, two men got off and tried to steal a Jeep. One unlocked the door swiftly and the other climbed in to start the engine.
Just as they were about to drive away, policemen rushed out. The two men abandoned the Jeep and began to run. They fired pistols at chasing policemen.
After firing warning shots into the air, the officers shot the two armed robbers in the leg and apprehended them.
Meanwhile, another group of officers closed in on the gang's car and ordered the other two men to get out. But they suddenly started the car, bumped into one officer and drove away.
In the ensuing car chase, the fugitives' car hit a tree but they continued to run on foot and were eventually captured in a local hospital as both men were injured in the car crash. Police also detained another man who came to pick them up.
Initial investigation showed that the gang had stolen at least three cars. They had a clear division of labor. One man acted as their technical adviser.
