Guangzhou seizes record 1-ton heroin

CUSTOMS officers in south China's Guangzhou Province have seized 1.03 tons of heroin and caught 20 suspects in a record drug bust since the foundation of the People's Republic of China in 1949.

The drug will be burned this Friday in Guangdong's Humen County to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.

The packs of the drugs would cover a standard basketball court if laid flat, officers said.

Huangpu Customs officers in Guangzhou became suspicious last October about marble imports by Changzhou company. They found some stones, though looking identical to others in the same batch, had different weights and sounds.

Officers cracked the marbles and found 788 plastic packs of heroin. Further investigation netted another 545.28 kilograms of heroin.

An intensified campaign saw officers crack three more drug-smuggling cases, seizing 306.58kg, 53.5kg and 128kg heroin in marble imports by another three local companies.

They caught 20 suspects, believed to belong to different gangs.
