Guide detained after threatening tourist
A TOUR guide who was accused of threatening to kill a sightseer while brandishing a pointed object in an effort to force tourists to buy more from a shop was detained yesterday on suspicion of beating others, Beijing's tourism administration said.
An initial investigation showed the 29-year-old man surnamed Meng doesn't have a tour guide certificate, and the travel agency called Mingdutengda that he claimed to work for wasn't registered, Beijing News reported today. No details were released on the beating allegations.
The Beijing Tourism Development Commission determined Meng was running an illegal one-day trip. The case will be transferred to the urban management department because it has the jurisdiction over punishment of unlicensed tour guides, officials said.
A tourist from Tianjin first broke the story online on Thursday, along with a 25-second video that showed Meng shouting at a tourist, "You get off! I will kill you," while trying to reach the tourist with a pointed metal object in his hand.
The group taking the tour last Wednesday spent seven hours at six shops where they were hounded to buy, and Meng started abusing them after they didn't spend enough, the tourist said.
Police said Meng wasn't holding a knife as the tourist said but a screwdriver. Also, the tourist may have incorrectly reported information about the bus they were on. The license plate that was reported belongs to an authorized company, Yinjian International Travel Service, and is qualified to carry tourists, the local tourism commission said.
Police are still investigating Meng and traffic officials are talking to Yinjian to get more information on the bus.
