Guide detained over attempted rape

A TOUR guide at a scenic spot in the southwestern Yunnan Province has been detained over the attempted rape of a female tourist and injuries to other members of the group who came to the woman's aid, local government officials have said.

The tourism administration of Lijiang apologized to the tourists in the group, compensated their travel fees to Lugu Lake and money they paid for extra items, a total of 33,450 yuan (US$5,258).

The woman and the two tourists injured were still cooperating with the police investigation yesterday and had not signed for the compensation.

"The whole thing was like a horror movie and I don't want to recall his face ever again," the woman told the Yunnan Info Daily. "He dragged me into his room and tore off my clothes."

The tourist industry in Yunnan now faces questions over poor administration.

An official with the tourism bureau said the suspect, surnamed Cao, did not have a touring guide license but was allowed in the area. He told tourists he was a top guide.
