Guizhou hospital reports human bird flu infection
A PERSON in southwest China’s Guizhou Province, has been diagnosed as being infected with the H7N9 bird flu strain, health authorities said yesterday.
The 44-year-old, whose gender was not given, is reported to have had a high temperature since last Thursday. After failing to cure the fever at home, the person went to a hospital in Guiyang, the provincial capital, and was diagnosed with a lung infection.
On Tuesday, the results of a laboratory test showed the patient was infected with H7N9 avian influenza.
Prior to falling sick the person, whose family works in the poultry trade, had been in contact with live birds.
Medical checks have been carried out on the patient’s close contacts but no other infections have been reported.
Bird flu cases spike in winter and spring. In a bid to limit the number of cases, thousands of chickens were culled in south China’s Guangdong Province and Hong Kong this year.
Forty-three human cases of H7N9 have been reported in Guangdong this year.
