Guizhou official gets suspended death sentence for graft

A HIGH-RANKING official in southwest China's Guizhou Province was today sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for taking bribes of more than 9.54 million yuan (US$ 1.43 million).

Huang Yao, former chairman of the Guizhou Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, an advisory body to local legislature, was accused of abusing his power to help companies get approvals for land use and licenses during his office from 1993 to 2009, said Chengdu City Intermediate People's Court in Sichuan Province.

Huang also accepted bribes from several officials to help them get promotion, Xinhua reported today.

The bribes were all retrieved. Huang was deprived of his political rights and all his personal properties, the court said.

As Huang voluntarily confessed his corruptions, the court showed leniency in its verdict as the death penalty with a two-year reprieve can be commuted to life imprisonment under China's law.

Huang didn't say whether he will appeal after the court's ruling.
