Gun rampage suspect killed

A FARMER who allegedly killed a police officer and injured two others was shot dead by police after he refused to surrender in central Hunan Province, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.

According to Hunan public security authorities, Yang Yongfei, the chief officer of a police station in Dao County and two colleagues Guo Jianping and Zhou Juguang went to farmer Wang Huanyuan's home to mediate a family dispute between Wang and his wife at 11am on Friday.

During the mediation, Wang's wife told police that her husband used to steal building materials which were supposed to be used for local highway construction, Hunan police said.

When the police officers started to search for the materials at Wang's home, the farmer suddenly hit Yang and Guo with a hoe, killing Yang ot the scene and injuring Guo.

Wang then snatched Yang's gun and opened fire on Zhou, the other officer, before fleeing the scene, Hunan police said.

Hunan public security authorities immediately sent more police including armed officers to pursue the suspect after receiving the report.

At about 5pm, police found the suspect and surrounded him under the overpass near an expressway in Dao County's Xiangyang Village.

Wang hijacked an excavator and forced the driver at gunpoint to ram the police officers to help him flee.

After Wang failed to respond to police warnings and refused to surrender, police officers shot him dead to save the hostage, Hunan police said.

The case is still undergoing further investigation.
