Gunman who killed 3 caught in Jiangsu
A gunman who killed three people in robberies was captured by police in eastern China's Jiangsu Province, and much of the stolen money was recovered, police said yesterday.
The suspect, surnamed Wei, shot a victim, thought to be a Shandong native, inside his car in the city of Zhenjiang on February 29 and killed two others in Nanjing, the provincial capital, on March 2, the Ministry of Public Security said yesterday.
Wei was arrested in his home in Nanjing on Monday after a six-day police investigation and has confessed to his crimes. But no details were provided as the police investigation was ongoing, the statement said.
The first victim, in his 30s, was shot to death while sitting in the passenger seat of a sedan parked in front of a government building. A resident found his body around 10am on February 29 and reported it to police, reported a local newspaper, the Jinling Evening News.
"I saw his head fall over and he was still bleeding," the report quoted the witness as saying. "His eyes were closed. A round crack, around three to four centimeters in diameter, appeared in the windshield. I knocked the window and attempted to call him but he remained silent."
The killer fled after the murder, which caused widespread panic among the provincial residents. "I'm so scared! I hope he will never run to my city, Changzhou," said a netizen on Weibo.com.
The incident reminded people of a gunman who shot seven people dead in seven armed robberies in different cities over the past eight years. The unidentified man committed the latest murder in Nanjing on January 6 and is still at large.
