Guo could face 10-year prison term
SELF-CONFESSED gambler Guo Meimei was arrested yesterday for allegedly running a casino, authorities confirmed.
Under Chinese law, if she is found guilty, she could be jailed for up to 10 years.
Police said Guo, 23, was addicted to gambling and traveled frequently to Macau, Hong Kong and foreign countries to place bets. She met another gambler, surnamed Kang, at the end of 2012 and they became lovers.
In February 2013, the pair rented an apartment in east Beijing’s Chaoyang District, before purchasing gambling tables, chips and a POS machine.
Guo hired professional dealers and took a cut of between 3 and 5 percent on each game played, the pots for which were frequently more than 1 million yuan (US$160,000).
