Gynecologist detained over baby trafficking

A GYNECOLOGIST in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province has been detained by police on suspicion of infant trafficking.

The doctor, surnamed Zhang, from Fuping County Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, is alleged to have sold a newborn for 21,600 yuan (US$3,494) on July 17 to two people from neighboring Shanxi Province, according to the county’s public security bureau.

The two from Shanxi, surnamed Pan and Cui, have already been detained. It is alleged that they sold on the baby for 30,000 yuan.

By yesterday afternoon, another four families in Fuping had reported similar experiences to local police, the bureau said. But local media in Shaanxi yesterday said seven families have had similar experiences.

Police found Zhang lied to the parents of the baby born on July 16, saying the child had infectious diseases and a disability, reported Xinhua news agency.

Zhang is said to have persuaded them to let her “deal with it,” the Chinese Business View reported.

When the mother-to-be, surnamed Dong, went to hospital on July 15 to prepare for giving birth, Zhang told her husband, surnamed Lai, that his wife was infected with contagious diseases, it is reported.

“My wife had tested healthy in antenatal checkups. Then Zhang suddenly told me my wife had hepatitis B and syphilis. I was stunned,” Lai said.

The child would also be carrying the viruses and could infect others, Zhang allegedly claimed, and persuaded Lai to sign over the child to her.

It is reported that Zhang asked Lai for 100 yuan to “deal with” his son. Lai said she later told him that “a man buried the baby.”

Hospital records show that the boy was born with a hip deformity but no infectious diseases.

Dong suspected that her child had been abducted and contacted police on July 20.

Wang Li’nian, Party Chief with the Fuping hospital said Zhang was not on duty when Dong was there, so she was not authorized to enter the delivery room. “As a skilled doctor, Zhang should have followed rules,” he said.

Police are hunting for the baby.
