HFM disease has claimed 15 lives

AT least 15 people have died of hand-foot-mouth disease this year in east China's Shandong Province, with the local health authority reporting two more deaths yesterday.

The two victims, one from Heze City and the other from Liaocheng City, died on Sunday, according to the provincial health administration. It did not provide further details about the two latest victims.

As of yesterday, all 17 cities of the province have reported the disease. In total, 11,489 cases of the disease have been reported, with 7,117 of those having recovered.

Heze, the worst-hit area, confirmed a total of 4,557 cases on Sunday.

Heze has registered 12 deaths from the disease since the outbreak; Jining City has two; and Liaocheng, one. The first victim, a 20-month boy, died in Heze on March 22.

More than 80 experts from 10 medical institutions have been sent to Heze to assist the local medical service.

Hand-foot-mouth disease is a common childhood illness that mainly affects children under the age of 10.
