HIV-positive man appeals over job discrimination

AN HIV-positive college student appealed after a court in east China's Anhui Province ruled against his claim that he was illegally denied a job by an education department due to his HIV status.

The job seeker, identified as Xiao Wu, filed an appeal to Anqing City Intermediate People's Court today as he said the court applied a wrong law in its ruling on October 13, China Youth Daily reported today.

Xiao Wu, in his 20s, said the education department of Anqing City used China's civil servant's recuitment regulation, under which people who fail to meet health requirements are not eligible for a government job, to explain why they denied him the school job in August.

Xiao Wu said the department had violated the a employment-related law issued in 2008 that makes it illegal to discriminate any job applicant for an infectious disease.

"Please give HIV carriers a chance to work and don't separate us from others," Xiao Wu said in a public letter to several HIV/AIDS ambassadors, China Youth Daily reported today.
