HK LegCo meeting adjourned due to insufficient quorum
A Hong Kong's Legislative Council (LegCo) meeting scheduled to be convened Thursday morning was adjourned for lack of a quorum.
The meeting was originally planned to resume the debate of a government resolution to establish an Innovation and Technology Bureau, but fewer than 35 lawmakers showed up on time, which forced the adjournment of the council meeting.
Some lawmakers explained that their absence was due to the unpredictable traffic congestion caused by the Occupy movement.
Meanwhile, some lawmakers admitted that they had deliberately stayed away.
One lawmaker Albert Chan said he did not show up for the reason that he is strongly opposed to the establishment of the new bureau because it was a waste of public money.
LegCo President Tsang Yok-sing said it was irresponsible not to attend the council meeting and all the excuses were unacceptable.
Tsang said the meeting had to be postponed until next Wednesday.
Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development So Kam-leung said to media Thursday that Innovation and Technology Bureau could provide impetus for innovation and also be conducive to economy.
So suggested that the adjournment would not have a great impact on the establishment of the new bureau as it still took time for LegCo's finance committee to scrutinize the funding proposal.
