HK To Vaccinate 2 Million At-Risk People
HONG Kong will start a swine flu vaccination program giving priority to about 2 million people: medical staff, children between six months and six years old, the elderly and people with health conditions, health chief York Chow said yesterday.
Four people tested positive for the H1N1 virus in the special administrative region yesterday, bringing the number of confirmed cases to 45, local health authorities said.
Chow told a news conference that the executive council has decided to immediately initiate the process for procurement of swine flu vaccines for the four target groups recommended by the Scientific Committees of the Center for Health Protection of Hong Kong.
Since each person requires two doses, the government will order 4 million doses of vaccines, and 1 million doses will be obtained for those who wanted to pay for the vaccination.
The total cost of the voluntary vaccination program was estimated at HK$700 million (US$90.3 million).
