HK cracks down on dishonesty

HONG Kong is cracking down on dishonest sales practices with new legislation coming into force on March 2, Customs officials said yesterday.

The Trade Descriptions Ordinance (Amendment) 2008 and eight pieces of related legislation target unscrupulous trade practices including: making false representations regarding after-sale services; giving misleading, unclear or incomplete information as to the price of the goods; giving misleading price indications for electronic products and making false or misleading representations regarding a retailer's connection with or endorsement by individuals or bodies of good standing and reputation.

Shops selling gold, platinum, diamond and natural jade products will be required to issue invoices or receipts containing prescribed product information.

Retail shops selling electronic products, including digital cameras and cell phones, will also have to issue invoices or receipts which include details of after-sales services.
