HK health warning over protein in Muji pizza mix
A DAIRY protein which could cause a serious allergic reaction in some people has been found in a pizza mix sold in Japanese retailer Muji's stores in Hong Kong.
The city's food safety watchdog has ordered an immediate halt to sales of the product.
The 150 gram packs, labeled "Thin pizza mix with rice flour" are produced in Japan by the Ryohin Keikaku Company Limited, according to Hong Kong's Wen Wei Po newspaper. Muji imported the mix to be sold in Hong Kong outlets.
However, the protein found in the pizza mix is not listed as an ingredient on the packaging, the newspaper reported.
This is in contravention of Hong Kong's food safety laws which stipulate fines of up to HK$50,000 (US$6,444) and even six months in jail for serious offenses.
The watchdog said the discovery was made during regular inspections of samples obtained from Muji stores that were sent for laboratory tests. It said the dairy protein in question could induce vomiting, diarrhea, eczema and even shock in some consumers.
The watchdog has warned city residents with a history of allergic reactions not to eat the product and to consult their doctors if they felt sick after eating it.
Muji told Shanghai Daily yesterday that none of its stores on Chinese mainland sold food products. A company official said that currently food products were only available in its Hong Kong outlets.
At the Muji store on downtown Nanjing Road W., a shop assistant said stores on the mainland used to sell imported food products from Japan but this stopped for safety reasons after the earthquake and tsunami last March which caused a radiation leak.
On e-commerce platform taobao.com only one dealer offers the Muji pizza mix and the store's records show that there had no requests for it to be sent to customers living on the Chinese mainland.
