HK kidnapping suspects plead guilty
EIGHT people accused of kidnapping and ransoming a Hong Kong heiress for HK$28 million (US$3.6 million) have pleaded guilty in an ongoing trial in Shenzhen City in south China’s Guangdong Province,
Six were indicted for kidnapping and two others were charged with handling illegal gains. Their trial opened at Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court on Thursday.
They have admitted to being involved in the abduction of Queenie Rosita Law, the 29-year-old granddaughter of Law Ting-pong, late founder of the Bossini clothing empire, Hong Kong’s Takungpao website reported yesterday.
As the ninth suspect, Zheng Xingwang, wasn’t caught in the Chinese mainland, he will be tried separately.
All of them are Chinese mainland residents.
Shenzhen prosecutors said they broke into Law’s house in Kowloon Peak in the early hours of April 25, 2015, when Law and her boyfriend were in bed.
They allegedly tied the pair up and forced Law to open a safe, from which they took watches and jewellery worth HK$2 million. And then they took Law to a cave, prosecutors said.
Law was held for about three days before her family paid HK$28 million for her release. The gang hid HK$18 million on the hill and divided up the rest, prosecutors said.
In early May 2015, eight of the suspects were captured in Guangdong and Guizhou provinces and Zheng was arrested in Hong Kong while attempting to flee back to the mainland.
According to prosecutors, the gang had been planning to kidnap someone in Hong Kong since March 2015. And six of them, including the alleged ringleader You Dunkui, are said to have climbed over a wire fence to get from Shenzhen to Hong Kong.
You told the court he had wanted to give up on carrying out the plan, but the others insisted that he continue with the caper. He also claimed that the idea was proposed by Zheng, who had decorated Law’s house. However, seven others claimed You had planned the whole thing, Hong Kong’s Wenweipo reported.
