HK may raise childbirth fees for mainland women

HONG Kong public hospitals will possibly raise delivery charges for mainland women who cross the border to give birth, causing a shortage of hospital beds in the territory, China News Service reported today.

York Chow Yat-ngok, Hong Kong's secretary for food and health, said authorities were discussing a new price scheme to replace the old one adopted four years ago.

The scheme aims to cope with a growing shortage of maternity wards and staff in public hospitals as an increasing number of mainland pregnant women come to Hong Kong to seek better medical service, a permanent residency for their children in the special administrative region, or to dodge mainland's one-child policy.

About 41,000 out of the 88,000 babies born last year in Hong Kong belonged to mainland women, according to Henry Tang Ying-yen, chief secretary for administration.

Tang said the number was expected to surge to 50,000 a year in the near future.
