HK may reclaim funds given to quake-hit school

THE Hong Kong government plans to reclaim millions of yuan it donated to a quake-devastated city in southwest China to rebuild a damaged school after local authorities pulled down that school for a massive real estate project.

The Hong Kong government and the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers donated HK$2 million (US$257,000) each to Mianyang City in the aftermath of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, Mak Chai-kwong, an official with the Hong Kong Development Bureau, said in an interview with the Hong Kong Commercial Radio.

But the Zijing Ethnic Minorities Middle School, which was rebuilt in 2010 for minority students from the Aba Prefecture, has been demolished to make room for a large-scale commercial housing project by a private developer.

Earlier media reports claimed that Dalian Wanda Commercial Properties Co Ltd has already started work on the project.

Wong Kwan-yu, head of the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers, however, sided with the Mianyang government, saying, "local authorities plan to build a larger school elsewhere." She added that the federation has no plans to reclaim its donation.

According to a document presented by Wong, the Mianyang government has decided to build a better-equipped middle school at an education park which will open in August next year, People's Daily's website reported.
