HK newspaper apologizes for wrong name
HONG Kong's leading English-language newspaper has apologized for misidentifying Chinese president Hu Jintao in a front-page photo caption.
Yesterday, the South China Morning Post's main front-page photo showed Hu arriving in the US for the Nuclear Security Summit. The English caption identified Hu correctly, but the Chinese characters printed in parentheses showed the name of Hu Jia instead.
Hu Jia, has been in the news recently after authorities rejected him for medical parole after a possible diagnosis for liver cancer. He was jailed for sedition after being accused of plotting to disturb the Olympic Games.
Today, the Post ran a front-page apology, saying it "sincerely apologizes for the Chinese name translation error for President Hu Jintao in yesterday's newspaper."
Copies of the Tuesday edition of the Post sold in Beijing had the Chinese characters for Hu Jia blacked out.
