HK raises avian flu alert to 'serious' after 3 bird deaths
HONG Kong has raised its bird flu alert to serious after three birds were confirmed to have died from the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus last week.
The special administration government is to cull 17,000 chickens today, York Chow, secretary for food and health, said at a press conference last night, Xinhua news agency reported today.
Hong Kong suspended the sale and import of live poultry for 21 days after finding the H5N1 bird flu virus in a chicken carcass. The government has not determined whether the infected chicken was bred at local farms or was imported, Chow said.
The carcass was from Cheung Sha Wan Temporary Wholesale Poultry Market, which has been declared an infected place and will remain closed until January 12, he said.
The market is located in Hong Kong's Kowloon.
Two wild birds were also found to have died of the virus, BBC reported.
