HK raises red fire alert

HONG Kong raised its highest alert for fires as two blazes were reported yesterday in the city's New Territories.

The Information Services Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region confirmed that one of the wildfires was in Pat Heung in the center of the New Territories. The other was in Robins Nest in the northern New Territories. Both began on Monday afternoon and firefighters were still battling the blazes as of yesterday.

The Hong Kong Observatory issued a red fire alert at 8:02am. The countryside is extremely vulnerable to fires at this time of year due to a lack or precipitation.

The city's Information Services Department said the wildfire in Pat Heung has so far destroyed about 10,000 square meters of forest.

Officials don't know what caused the fires.

The Hong Kong Observatory said if people plan to spend the day in the countryside, they'd better take measures to prevent hill fires.

The penalty for lighting fires illegally in the countryside is a HK$25,000 (US$3,313) fine and up to one year in prison, it said.
