HK stays upbeat despite rival park

THE planned Shanghai Disneyland theme park and the existing Hong Kong Disneyland could be complementary, a senior official of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government said yesterday.

Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Rita Lau said the two parks could even cooperate with each other in the future.

The Chinese economy was growing fast and the market would be big enough to sustain two Disneyland theme parks, she said.

Hong Kong Disneyland Resort Managing Director Andrew Kam said the announcement in Shanghai yesterday marked "another significant step for Disney" in China.

Margaret Fong, commissioner for the special administrative region's tourism, said she was confident that Hong Kong Disneyland would remain attractive and competitive.

Fong said the park attracted visitors from not only the mainland but also Southeast Asia and other areas.

Some of the region's businesspeople and visitors said they expected the desire of the Chinese mainland residents to visit Hong Kong Disneyland would be reduced after the Shanghai park opened.
