HK wants money back after a school it donated was pulled down

THE Hong Kong government is going to reclaim millions yuan it donated to a quake-devastated city in southwestern China to rebuild a damaged school after local authorities pulled down that school for a massive real estate project.
The Hong Kong government and the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers donated HK$2 million (US$257,000) each to Mianyang City after the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake, Mak Chai-kwong, an official with the Hong Kong Development Bureau, told journalists.
But the Zijing Ethnic Minorities Middle School, which was rebuilt in 2010 for minority students from the Aba Prefecture, has been demolished to make room for a large-scale commercial housing project by a private developer.
Wong Kwan-yu, an official with the Hong Kong Federation of Education Workers, however, sided with the Mianyang government, saying "local authorities have built a larger school elsewhere."
Mak didn't agree with her, saying the local officials "forced the school to close and move." He said an investigation team has been sent to Mianyang to collect facts.
The Hong Kong government donated a total of HK$9 billion to Sichuan Province after the 2008 earthquake to aid local reconstruction, today's Western Daily reported.
