HP laptops found faulty

CHINA'S quality control regulator said yesterday they had found faults in Hewlett-Packard Corp laptops sold in China and condemned the firm for ignoring consumer protection rules.

HP had initially denied the faults and said that the problems were caused by improper use and environment, and even the influence of "cockroaches" in China. The case quickly gained online notoriety as "cockroachgate."

The General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine found several HP models affected by defective video cards and display screens, which caused problems such as overheating, the administration said on its Website.

The fault caused overheating, crashing and black screens on some HP Pavilion DV2000 and Compaq Presario v3000 laptops, the statement said.

HP had failed to provide "three guarantees" -- a refund, replacement or repair, the administration said.

"HP acknowledges the findings of the administration. We are working on a detailed action plan to ensure all points are addressed and will publicly outline this plan soon," HP said yesterday.

More than 300 laptop users have demanded a recall.
