Hack-attack gang placed under arrest

FOUR men who allegedly organized the country's largest Internet hack attack have been arrested.

The attack left millions of users unable to gain access to the Internet in 15 provinces and regions in May, Guangzhou-based New Express Daily reported yesterday.

Police in Foshan, Guangdong Province, said the gang ran a private server in the city for online games and advertisements. They attacked DNS (Domain Name System) to take revenge on their rivals.

The gang leader, a 23-year-old man surnamed Xu from Zhejiang Province, rented 81 private servers for 280,000 yuan (US$41,000) for the attack, the report said.

Netizens in Jiangsu, Anhui, Hainan, Gansu and Zhejiang provinces and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region were unable to access the Internet from 5pm on May 19 and more people in other provinces suffered network breakdowns the next day.

DNS is a hierarchical naming system for computers on the Internet. It associates various information with domain names assigned to certain computers and locates and addresses these devices worldwide.

DNS basically serves as a "phone book" by translating computer host names into IP addresses.

DNS offers servers to many portal and famous Websites.

More than 100,000 Websites were paralyzed in the attack.

Police traced the gang's IP address to a cotton factory in Foshan and caught them there on June 1.
