Hacker jailed for role in student鈥檚 death
A HACKER was sentenced to six years in prison and fined 60,000 yuan (US$9,000) yesterday for his role in a fraud case linked to the death of a teenager.
In 2016, Du Tianyu sold the personal information of students taking that year’s college entrance examination to Chen Wenhui, allowing Chen and his accomplices to call the students and swindle them.
One of the victims was Xu Yuyu from the city of Linyi in east China’s Shandong Province.
She died of cardiac arrest in August 2016 after losing 9,900 yuan to the fraudsters. The money was to have paid for her university fees.
The fraud contributed to Xu’s death, according to Linyi’s Intermediate People’s Court, which handled Chen’s case.
Yesterday, the People’s Court in Linyi’s Luozhuang District found Du had hacked into a website that contained details of more than 640,000 Shandong exam takers. He sold the personal information of more than 100,000 of them to Chen for 14,100 yuan.
Chen’s gang then made more than 10,000 calls and swindled students out of more than 200,000 yuan.
Chen was given a life sentence in July. Six accomplices were jailed from three to 15 years.
