Hainan cops arrested for freeing a killer

TWO policemen in south China's Hainan Province were arrested after they let go of a drunken man who told them he had killed a woman and her two sons. The freed suspect later killed another woman and her son and injured her daughter before turning himself in again.

Zhang Xiang and Xu Jisong, officers at the Dazhipo Town Public Security Bureau, were arrested for duty negligence, which led to the death of a woman and her 10-year-old son, Xinhua News Agency quoted Hainan police today.

Zhang and Xu were on duty at 6am, November 9, when the 36-year-old suspect, Chen Huangye, came to the bureau by bike and claimed he hacked his 37-year-old neighbor, surnamed Lin, and her two sons aged 10 and 12 to death over a dispute three hours before.

Zhang didn't take Chen seriously as Chen was reeking of alcohol. Zhang called his superior Xu and let Chen go free with Xu's consent, Xinhua said.

After leaving the bureau, Chen rode to a house miles away and hacked another 35-year-old woman, surnamed Wu, and her 10-year-old son to death. Chen also wounded Wu's 12-year-old daughter.

Chen then returned to the bureau and gave himself up again. This time he was detained.
