Hainan gets ready to weather the storm

ALL passenger ships were forced to cease operations in the south Qiongzhou Strait yesterday afternoon after powerful gusts of wind brought by the fourth tropical storm of the year, "Haima," which had formed early on Tuesday, the marine bureau of south China's Hainan Province said.

Qiongzhou Strait is located between Hainan and Guangdong provinces.

Wu Qiang, deputy manager of the Xiuying Passenger Ferry Company in Haikou, capital of Hainan Province, said the temporary suspension of its services had stranded about 100 travelers and vehicles.

The National Meteorological Center has forecast that "Haima" will bring downpours to southern Fujian, southern Guangdong, eastern Hainan, and central and southern Taiwan with wind speeds up to 17.1 meters a second at the Qiongzhou Strait.

On Tuesday, Hainan's provincial marine bureau launched its tropical storm emergency response system and issued a typhoon alert.

At Haikou's Meilan International Airport, no flights took off or landed from 3pm yesterday due to the storm.

Six flights were canceled, and five flights were diverted.
