Hainan relaxes duty-free shopping restrictions

CHINA'S southernmost Hainan Province will increase travelers' duty-free shopping quota, lower their age limit and expand duty-free goods catalogue next month, the Ministry of Finance said today.

Duty-free shopping quota will be raised from 5,000 yuan (US$800) to 8,000 yuan, and travelers, except residents of Hainan Province, are allowed to make duty-free purchases if they are over 16 years old, instead of 18 now.

The province will also add cosmetic and healthcare equipment, tableware, kitchenware, and toys (including baby carriage) to the duty-free catalogue, bringing the number of goods categories to 21.

The initiative is aimed at boosting tourism in Hainan and turning the island province into an international tourist destination, the ministry said.

Tourists to Hainan are allowed to make duty-free purchases in designated shops twice a year and enjoy an 11 percent rebate on imported goods they bought on the island.
