Hair products checked

BEIJING'S food and drug watchdog is checking products made by a Beijing-based hair growth treatment company after reports that a chemical linked to cancer was found in one of its hair dyes.

The Zhangguang 101 Science and Technology Co Ltd has said the Zhangguang 101 Hair Coloring Cream seized by the Guangdong Food and Drug Administration for being tainted with m-phenylene diamine, an industry dye that may cause cancer, deformity or gene mutation, was fake products.

The Beijing FDA is exchanging information with its Guangdong counterparts and Zhangguang, the Beijing Evening News said.

A task force had been sent to the plant to carry out strict checks on relevant products, the Beijing FDA said.

A Beijing FDA official said the contamination might be due to the producer illegally adding the chemical or contamination during processing.

But he didn't rule out the possibility that the seized hair cream was fake and said that the authority would assist the enterprise in clamping down on fake products.

Guangdong FDA discovered the tainted Zhangguang product at a factory in the provincial capital, Guangzhou, during a recent check on unlicensed hair dyes.

It immediately notified the Beijing authority.

Zhangguang said the hair cream seized was unauthorized. Both the color of the packaging and the company name were wrong, it said.
