Half of zoo crocodiles killed by uncivilized visitors
FOUR of the eight crocodiles in a zoo in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, have been tortured to death by visitors who threw stones at them to keep them moving, a zoo keeper said.
Xu Shilian said the wounded crocodiles later succumbed to infections because they lived in water, today's Wuhan Evening News reported.
To protect the remaining four crocodiles, the zoo last month built an enclosure with a 2.5-meter-high window for viewing, Xu said.
Even so, cleaners have to climb into the enclosure every day to pick up litters from zoo visitors. They sometimes collect as many as 200 plastic water bottles in one afternoon.
Zoo workers often stop uncivilized tourists, but they cannot punish them due to a lack of legal regulations, said Xu Tiezhu, an official with the city's tourism bureau.
