Hangzhou Mayor dies of heart attack at NPC meeting in Beijing
Hangzhou Mayor Shao Zhanwei, also a deputy to the National People's Congress, died of a heart attack today in Beijing while attending the current session of the Chinese parliament, according to Xinhua News Agency.
Shao seemed all right yesterday afternoon at a group discussion of the government work report delivered by Premier Wen Jiabao in the morning.
The 57-year-old mayor was a native of Cixi, Zhejiang Province. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1980 and was appointed vice mayor of Ningbo in 1999. Later he held the posts of deputy Party secretary of Ningbo and Party secretary and mayor of Wenzhou from 2003 to 2010. He became deputy Party secretary and acting mayor of Hangzhou in 2010 and was appointed mayor in 2011.
