Hangzhou to award Uruguayan tourist for saving life
HANGZHOU Government will present Maria Fernanda, a Uruguayan tourist who saved a woman from drowning in the West Lake last month, an award of honor for her brave act, officials said today.
The award will include 3,000 yuan (US$472) in cash, said officials from the Hangzhou Foundation for Justice and Courage.
Fernanda and her boyfriend were strolling around the West Lake on October 13 when they saw a woman was drowning in the water in a suicide attempt. There were onlookers taking her pictures on the bank but no one tried to save her life.
Fernanda quickly undressed and jumped into the lake. She swam up to the woman and carried her toward the bank.
Earlier media reports said the unidentified rescuer was an American tourist. Recently people discovered that Fernanda was a Uruguayan living in Shanghai and will soon return to her own country.
