Hangzhou to fine smokers
PEOPLE smoking at various public venues in Hangzhou, capital of neighboring Zhejiang Province, will be fined up to 50 yuan (US$7.30) after the city's lawmakers passed a rule to help its campaign to stop smoking.
According to the rule, which was approved by the Hangzhou Committee of the Chinese People's Congress, smoking is banned in hospitals, cinemas, schools, concert halls, museums, libraries, sports stadiums, at heritage sites and conferences and on public transport, the Xinhua news agency reported.
The smoking ban also applies to mass gatherings in parks, plazas and other public venues.
People will be fined if they fail to follow the local public health authority's order to follow the rule and stop smoking.
