Happiness index falls as living costs rise

CHINESE women in the cities felt less happy in 2009 as they were the previous year although they were spending more and having better working conditions, according to a survey published by the All-China Women's Federation.

More than 1,000 women were surveyed between August and October last year in ten big cities, including Shanghai and Beijing. The results showed that they were less satisfied than in 2008 largely because of soaring house prices and low family income.

What concerned them most in 2009 was that they could not afford to buy an apartment. Rising commodity prices and stagnant wages also jarred on their nerves.

Though most urban women were happier with their jobs in 2009, the younger ones, mostly college graduates, were having trouble finding one.

More than 91.9 percent of female university students surveyed said they felt a prejudice against women at the job market, China News Service reported. The employment rate for female students was lower compared to that for male students.

To vent stress, urban women are more likely to spend money on shopping. The survey showed that, on average, urban Chinese women spend 63 percent of their monthly income on clothing, cosmetics, and other goods and services.
