Harbin roads crack up

A QUARTER of the roads in Harbin City suffered cracks after snow and sleet hit the northern most provincial capital recently.

Local residents complained that the roads were repaired every year but also became cracked and muddy every year, China National Radio reported yesterday.

According to the Harbin road and bridge management office, the Heilongjiang capital had 176 roads with cracks by early April.

A section of 500-plus meters of the city's Hengshan Raod in Xiangfang District had dozens of potholes or cracks, the report said. Repair workers at the scene also discovered the tarred surface was only 5 or 6 centimeters thick and the road lacked a gravel base beneath the asphalt layer.

One worker said the surface was too thin and below standard.

Harbin has begun repairing its cracked roads and is expected to complete the work by June 10.

Local residents are urging relevant departments to investigate the road engineering quality and punish construction companies responsible for shoddy work.
