Hard time: from jail guards to inmates
TWO prison guards in southern China will get a taste of life behind bars for being responsible for death-row inmate's escape.
The prison's deputy head, Chen Qingzhen, was jailed for five years and guard Tao Ende for three years by the Zhongshan County People's Court in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, according to China News Service yesterday.
Chen and Tao were working the night shift on March 30 when the escape happened.
Tao remembered that a death-row inmate once told him she had hidden 130,000 yuan (US$19,042) in cash and some gold in the county.
He released Feng Feng from her cell, put her in a room without any shackles, and tried to get her to tell the secret hiding place.
Feng sneaked a sleeping pill into Tao's drink and broke out of jail at 4am when both guards were sound asleep. She was caught four days later.
