Harmful chemicals found in face products

A BLACKLIST of 18 whitening and freckle eliminating cosmetics was announced by the State Food and Drug Administration yesterday after they were found to contain excessive amounts of harmful substances, such as mercury and phenol.

The administration has ordered provincial bureaus to screen the market for the unqualified products and warned customers not to buy or use the cosmetics.

All companies whose products are on the blacklist will face serious punishment, officials said, with those breaking the law to be sent to the police for further investigation.

Experts say long-term intake of mercury can damage the nervous system and phenol can harm the liver and kidneys.

Two products on the list were produced in Shanghai, according to the labels, while others were from Hong Kong, Guangdong Province and Harbin.

Officials from the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration said it was investigating the two local companies named on the labels and all products on the list would be immediately removed from the market.

One batch of masks from Shanghai Tayoi was said to have excessive quinhydrone, a chemical which could result in headaches, stomach problems, breathing difficulties and raised heart rates.

Qi Liubin from the Shanghai FDA said the masks were produced by Jiangsu Tayoi Cosmetics Co at the request Shanghai Tayoi.

Qi said they were also investigating Yuchun whitening and freckle eliminating lotion said to be produced by Shanghai Yuli Biological Technology Co and Shanghai Xuanzhijie Cosmetics Co.

It was a counterfeit product manufactured by another plant using the two companies' names, officials said.

Shanghai carries out regular monitoring of cosmetics and illegal substances including antibiotics and mercury, officials said.

Acne and freckle eliminating and whitening products were key targets, since they were likely to contain such substances, the officials said.
