Harsher punishment plea for rape teens

A LAWYER is helping a gang-rape victim’s family seek harsher punishment for the teenagers responsible for the attack in south China’s Guangdong Province last year, it was reported yesterday.

Li Binquan, a lawyer from Guangdong Guohui law office, has volunteered to take the case, the Nanfang Rural Daily said.

Last month, Wuchuan City prosecutors lodged a protest with the Intermediate People’s Court in Zhanjiang over sentences they also  deemed too lenient, the paper reported.

The ringleader, surnamed Dong, 17, was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Another 17-year-old was sentenced to five years and nine months. Three others were given three-year terms while the remaining seven received three-year terms suspended for four years and 11 months. All were aged between 14 and 17.

The newspaper said the 14-year-old victim was still suffering physically and mentally as a result of the attack on May 6 last year.

The teenagers, riding motorcycles, had forcibly stopped the victim and her cousin, who were also on a motorcycle, the Wuchuan People’s Court heard.

They grabbed the victim’s cellphone and raped her.

The attack left a deep emotional scar, according to the Southern Metropolis Daily.

“I have no idea how my husband and I have managed to get through the past year,” her mother said.

The girl was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and her condition hasn’t improved. “At first, she could say a word in response. But later, she just kept silent,” her mother said, adding she could hardly remember what her daughter’s voice sounded like.
