‘Hatred for society’ cited in 29 vehicle torchings with 12m yuan in losses

Nineteen high-end sedans, nine medium-sized and large buses and one motorcycle were burned in less than half a year in an arson spree in Datong, capital of Shanxi Province, police said.

Three suspects are in custody, with two arrested.

Police said a 19-year-old suspect surnamed Liu was motivated to commit the arson due to his hatred for society when he finishing serving a prison sentence. There were no details as to the motivations of the two other suspects, an 18-year-old surnamed Wu and a 27-year-old surnamed Han.

The total loss was more than 12 million yuan (US$1.9 million), authorities said.

Cases of vehicle arson had been reported in the Heng’an New Area of Datong since August.

Six buses were burned on August 26 at the city’s long-distance bus station at a loss of over 1.5 million yuan while 10 Audi cars were set on fire at an auto 4S (sale, spare part, service, survey) dealerships, with a loss reaching 5.7 million yuan.

The police arrested two of the suspects on January 13. The suspects confessed to nine acts of arson and 37 cases of robbery, plunder and burglary. A third suspect was then captured.
