Have-a-go Brazilian sad no one helped
A BRAZILIAN beaten up by thieves in a busy shopping mall in southern China's Guangdong Province has said he is disappointed no-one came to his aid.
The 27-year-old, known as Mozen, was trying to stop a theft in Guangdong's Dongguan City last Friday when the gang attacked him, reported Dongguan Daily. He was taken to hospital and received 10 stitches to a head wound.
The Brazilian has been awarded by the local authorities, but the case has again highlighted some local people's apparent indifference to those in trouble.
Mozen said he was disappointed by the reaction of mall staff and shoppers.
"I think people should help each other. I go to the shopping center every day and almost everyone knows me," he said.
"But when I was being beaten, no one was willing to help," Mozen said.
He said he would not intervene if a similar situation arose again.
The drama began as Mozen was on his way to a gym when he saw a thief trying to steal from a woman who was waiting at traffic lights.
Mozen tapped the thief on the arm with his umbrella to let him know he had been spotted and indicating for him to stop.
However, the thief and two accomplices chased him into a nearby shopping mall. One struck Mozen on the head with a rod while another lashed him with a belt.
A witness working at the mall said there were at least 30 people at the scene but they just stood by and watched. Once the gang had left, a few went to help the foreigner.
A teacher, surnamed Tang, alerted two security guards standing only 30 meters from the scene. However, they refused to intervene.
Local residents said the gang of thieves has hung around the center for years, and were often armed with knives.
Just before Mozen was beaten, they had struck a woman.
Last October, also in Guangdong, a two-year-old run over by two vans was ignored by 18 people before a passerby called for help. The girl later died.
