Head suspended after pupils' suicide bid

THE headmaster of a northwest China primary school has been suspended after five grade-six pupils drank weedkiller in a suicide attempt.

Two children are still in hospital for treatment while three are out of hospital, today's China Business News reported.

Officials from Fufeng County Education Bureau in Shaanxi Province have interviewed the children and their parents for an investigation, parents told the newspaper.

Their investigation indicated a teacher surnamed Yang slapped the neck of two pupils while mediating a class dispute at Tangfang Primary School.

The pupils, feeling shamed, decided to take poison to kill themselves and asked another three to join the suicide bid, the report said.

Three girls and two boys swallowed the poison at a temple on July 3 and were found by villagers who sent them to hospital.

Tests found the poison was a weedkiller. Four of the pupils were living alone in the village, left behind by their parents who worked outside the county.

The education authority said it is considering penalizing Yang.
