Headmaster accused of raping student, 12

A HEADMASTER from Shaanxi Province has been detained for allegedly raping a 12-year-old student, China Business Daily reported yesterday.
A primary investigation has confirmed that a 58-year-old man surnamed Zhang raped the girl on three separate occasions, local police were quoted as saying.
The child’s parents discovered what had happened on May 27 when the victim, Xiao Ying (not her real name), was sent home from boarding school after complaining of a stomach ache.
At a local clinic the mother was told her daughter was pregnant, though the child miscarried soon after, the report said.
The girl told police she was first raped by Zhang — who at the time was head teacher of her school in Meixian County — in a classroom after her schoolmates had left.
“He forced me to swallow some tablets. I felt dizzy and don’t know what happened after that,” the girl said.
Over the next four months, Zhang raped her two more times in his dormitory room, she said, adding that he also threatened to kill her parents if she told them.
On Saturday, May 24, after Zhang had been transferred to a different school, he met up with Xiao Ying as she was going to a friend’s home and coerced her into going to his house, the report said.
Pregnancy test
After making the girl take a pregnancy test, which was positive, Zhang forced her to drink an unknown liquid and gave her some tablets to take over the next three days.
It was this concoction that resulted in Xiao Ying experiencing abdominal pains at school, the report said.
After discovering their daughter’s plight, Xiao Ying’s parents chose not to report it to police for fear it would ruin her reputation.
In the meantime, Zhang paid the family 50,000 yuan (US$8,000) to cover the girl’s medical expenses.
Regardless of the family’s wish for confidentiality, the case was leaked online and the authorities were alerted.
As well as the police probe, the discipline inspection committee and education administration have launched inquiries, the report said.
The maximum penalty for the rape of an underage girl is death, according to the law.
