Headmaster killed by campus attacker when protecting students

A school headmaster became a hero in Xinhua County, central Hunan Province after he tried to capture a scissors-stabbing attacker on campus and was killed in the chase yesterday afternoon.

Witnesses said the attacker climbed over the school wall and ran toward a 9-year-old student, Wang Zhenyu, and slashed him with a pair of scissors around 1:50pm. Wang and his classmates were having a sports class on the playground.

The boy immediately collapsed in blood. Doctors are not optimistic about his survival, today's Sanxiang Metro Daily reported.

Yang Jianyi, the 59-year-old headmaster of the Beidu Central Primary School, was repairing a broken faucet in a school building when he heard the cry for help, a witness surnamed Liu said.

He chased the attacker for more than 200 meters to the outside. "The headmaster was fatally stabbed in the fight and fell in a vegetable field," Liu said.

Local officials said Yang was stabbed several times in his head and his face was badly mutilated. His clenched fists were stained with mud, the report said.

Police are still hunting for the killer.

A local villager who refused to give his name said the attacker was the boy's neighbor and long held a grudge against his parents. He was heard swearing to make the family lose their offspring, the paper said.
