Health Ministry sends 4 experts to save crash girl's legs
THE Ministry of Health has sent four more medical experts to Wenzhou in eastern Zhejiang Province today to hold consultation on the cases of Xiang Weiyi, a two-year-old survivor of the deadly July 23 train crash, and another seriously injured victim.
These experts in neuro-trauma, rehabilitation and sports medicine will assess their conditions and figure out the best treatment plans for them, Xinhua reported today.
The ministry already sent a doctor from Beijing's Jishuitan Hospital to operate on Xiang yesterday, the fifth surgery the girl went through after she was pulled alive from the wreckage 22 hours after the crash.
The surgery went well, but Xiang is unlikely to gain full function of both legs as too much dead muscle and nerves have been removed, her uncle, Xiang Yuyu, told the Guangzhou Daily.
The girl will be transferred to Shanghai's Huashan Hospital this week for further treatment, her uncle said.
Xiang Yuyu published an open letter on his blog to appeal for medical experts to help save the girl's legs. She was trapped with her legs crushed for 22 hours. Her parents were among the 40 killed in the collision.
