Health official detained after 36 kids infected with hepatitis

A disease prevention and control official has been detained for alleged dereliction of duty that resulted in 36 kindergarten children being infected with hepatitis A in Henan Province.
Pingdingshan City People's Procuratorate has launched an investigation into the 48-year-old official surnamed Zhao, Dahe Daily reported today.
Zhao headed the disease prevention and control work in Xindian Town of Pingdingshan's Yexian County from September 2003.
On November 25, six kids at Xiaoshuaicai kindergarten were diagnosed with hepatitis A.
Zhao failed to report the outbreak to higher health authorities to take disease control and prevention measures, which resulted in the disease spreading among children, the report said.
By the time the outbreak was reported on December 30, 36 children had been infected with hepatitis A.
