Heart patient dies after waiting long hours in hospital

A HOSPITAL in central Henan Province has paid 35,000 yuan (US$5,279) in compensation to the family of a man who died of heart attack after being left to wait nearly six hours outside the exam room.

Treatment never came to the 40-year-old Meng Deying, who was admitted in the Nanyang City No.1 People's Hospital at 9am after he felt chest pain and difficulty in breathing last Friday, reported local Orient Today.

Meng was told to undertake a series of diagnostic exam first by a chief doctor surnamed Ding, who declined Meng's wife's request to prescribe some medicine to temporarily soothe his suffering, the newspaper said.

Despite his growing pains, Meng had to wait for hours as each exam room was full. It wasn't until Meng collapsed in front of the color ultrasonic room on the third floor -- after he finished blood test -- that the hospital staff jumped to rescue, said Meng's wife.

But it was too late. Meng lied on the floor with his test form still in hand. He was pronounced dead at 2:30pm after a cardiac arrest, nearly six hours after he was admitted.
