Heat kills 8 workers
AS the country sizzles under the worst heat wave this year, eight outdoor workers died from sunstroke in east China, sparking criticisms of their employers for not protecting them.
The eight victims in Jinan City, Shandong Province, were all sanitary workers and migrant workers on construction sites, who had to spend long hours under the scorching sun.
Local hospital wards were full with sunstroke patients since Saturday when the temperature soared above 36 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, a total of 53 people are reported to have died from heat-related illnesses in northwest Xi'an City in Shaanxi Province.
The north is having a respite after the state meteorological center forecasted heavy rain, but it's now the south's turn to sizzle.
