Heavy rain stalls traffic and leaves 3 dead in Chengdu

AT least three people were killed in a powerful rainstorm that pounded parts of Sichuan Province in southwest China over the weekend and traffic in Chengdu, the provincial capital, was disrupted, China News Service reported today.

The 113 meteorological observatories across the province recorded more than 50 millimeters of rainfall on Saturday and Sunday while 28 observatories reported precipitation of over 100 millimeters.

The heaviest rainfall recorded in downtown Chengdu was 215.9 millimeters, which led to flooding. Two people were killed by lightning as they were wading across a flooded street yesterday afternoon.

The rainstorm also raised the water level of the Yuquan River in Tianquan County where a student was drowned while trying to cross the river yesterday noon, said the Sichuan Provincial Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters.

According to local weather authorities, this rainstorm would continue until this morning. The flooding of all the main rivers in Sichuan will be under the warning level.
